nedit, kde & and the annoying copy&paste problem

Hello,

[i'm newly subscribed so i can't answer on older mails on this list]

After working with nedit for more than 10 years now, i'm deeply
disturbed by the copy&paste issue which was topic on this list for
several times.

In short: after some time nedit cannot longer use copy&paste, the keys
and menu entries appear inoperable.

After reading in the mailinglist archive i found several postings,
stating that the issue is probably fixed in CVS. So i compiled and
installed HEAD on my computer yesterday. Today i found nedit's
copy&paste dysfunctional again.

Some details:

- Ubuntu 9.10
- KDE 4.3.2 (standard Ubuntu 9.10)
- libtiff 3.8.2
- nedit HEAD (latest tarball from the website)
- nedit is started in server mode, nc starts new windows
- no tabbed mode, i want my editor windows on several desktops

So how can i help debugging this issue? I find myself restarting nedit
once or twice a day, loosing all open windows for several projects.

Thanks & kind regards

I have been using nedit since 2000 and never had copy/paste problems (on sun solaris 2.??, redhat 7.3, mandrake ?, redhat enterprise Linux 4 AS, opensuse 9.2 and opensuse 11 now, ) . As far as I know some of these kind of issues comes from lesstif. I am always using gnome on linux instead of KDE.

Regards,

John

Might this help:

Thanks. Now two things. Someone labeled the lesstif version you are
using as "Known Bad" probably for a reason.

The other thing is "the copy&paste problem" which someone said this
would be fixed in CVS. Who said so? Any references about what we are
actually talking about? The klipper thing [where you posted your
problem before] with disowing the selection doesn't seem to be
related. Please notice that some (all?) Qt folks confuse everybody by
calling the "PRIMARY selection" simply "clipboard", which in terms of
X is simply wrong.

Cheers,
Jörg

Someone else also labeled this version in debian (+ubuntu) as fixed:

Hum, good question. The days before i compiled and installed HEAD, i
have read the nedit mailinglist archive, all entries about this issue
over the last years. This bug is marked as invalid in KDE now:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129994
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129994#c27

based on the comment you made ;-)

So, i end up with a dysfunctional editor. And i would really appreciate
not to change my favoured editor just because of this issue.

Kind regards

That bug was about losing the selection in NEdit when shifting left or
right because klipper steals it. Is this your problem?

My NEdit isn't disfunctional, but I'm using

Built on: Linux, x86-64, GNU C

With Motif: (Untested) 2.3.1 [@(#)Motif Version 2.3.1]

Your problem might be related to the lesstif version in use. Or does
it only show up if klipper is running? Does it only show up if you are
using kde?

Cheers,
Jörg

I have seen the copy/paste problem with a nedit that I have statically linked to open motif, so this is not purely a lesstif issue.

I have seen the copy/paste problem with a nedit that I have statically
linked to open motif
What is this particular copy and paste problem? I know that I have had
some trouble copying things from NEdit and Pasting them into Opera if
Opera has already done some clipboard work of its own. I haven't really
determined what causes this, but Opera is a QT application.

The problem is that the copy&paste functionality stops working.
The behaviour is like you never pressed Ctrl+C or Cltrl+V.

I remember having trouble with selections when using NEdit and Klipper

of selections in KDE and Motif/Lesstif which can not be easliy resolved.
So, just not starting Klipper does the job for me.

Pls. have a look at the "Project Management" macros

<http://nedit.hackvalue.nl/niki/index.php/ProjectManagement>

which may help solving this issue. Starting different NEdit Servers for
each project using "nc -svrname proj-name" and using the PM macros
could be a solution to restore all open windows.
